Consumerism: They’re Selling Us a Dream of Who We Can Be. Let’s Wake Up! {Macklemore}

Just Don’t Buy into It.

What we Buy is not Who we Are: it’s a lesson hard won, particularly for advertising-inundated, impressionable children…a lesson beautifully chronicled in this here video via Macklemore. Loving this man.

I was like this, my friends were like this. We played bball, we treasured our kicks.

Luckily, I never had such nice shoes, and I never got mugged for ’em. But I wound up right where Macklemore wound up…shopping at a thrift store.

Today I’m wearing good old jeans, great old school duck boots, an ’80s Broncos jacket over an army sweater…the only things new on me are American Apparel organic undies and alpaca socks I bought at a farmers’ market in Halifax. And they define me: as someone who declines to be defined by consumerism, but rather as one among many who would rather, simply, support good people, and the health of our planet, by buying less, and buying quality, and buying that which supports good companies who do not seek to hype us into sheepdom.
