Getting to the heart of the Mayan matter isn’t as easy as it seems, what with the media hype.
Some people seem genuinely excited at the prospect of annihilation, and those are probably the same people (aka The History Channel) who are telling you that the Mayans actually predicted imminent doom.
What do astrologers have to say about this?
Well, it is clear that for a civilization that was working with rudimentary tools, the Mayans made some goose bump-invoking observations about the night sky. They created astrological predictions that surpassed those of all other civilizations at the time. It’s kind of a woo-woo thing—how good they were at predicting where the stars and planets would be centuries in the future, using only a few rocks and presumably string.
Every civilization has its specialty—whether that is inventing democracy, building an impossibly big pyramid or writing the most amazing poetry. Specialization in one area—astrology—caused the Mayans to create something that the whole world now knows about.
But what does it mean?
In my opinion, the Mayans had one foot rooted in the stars and the other in shamanic-type revelations. While it’s true that the calendar, which shows every day up until the 21st of this month, then abruptly ends, does point to some interesting astrological phenomena, the fact that they chose this end point is a bit mysterious. Nowhere in the hieroglyphics is anything mentioned about imminent zombie apocalypse following this date.
It’s a huge koan to future generations.
What they did manage to predict, astoundingly, is this: during the last few years, the earth has been transiting through the galactic center, the “dark center” of the galaxy, which is a process that takes years. This is not an easy thing to predict with no modern tools, and no other culture seems to have put their finger on the phenomenon.
So many seem to think this means the destruction of the universe, yet what Mayan descendants, and those from other cultures who may have had contact with the Mayans, or may be descended from them (such as the Hopi), say is that at this point, it could go either way for humanity, depending on how well we have done. This is just the deadline for reaching a certain level of collective consciousness. If we have reached it, we enter a golden age of enlightenment. If not, then presumably we will have to face some difficult truths. This is basically what I’ve gathered from reading and other astrological sources throughout the years (i.e., not The History Channel).

Evolution of both biology and mind moves in cycles. Scientists have proven that evolutionary leaps usually happen all of a sudden, and not gradually, as people might predict. Nature itself shows that things are not always revealed in shades of grey, but that dramatic changes can occur.
The same is true in human lives. While we seemingly plod along in our daily lives, other humans are going through dramas that can’t be fully grasped just by turning on the evening news. Huge personal successes and failures happen all the time, in our lives and in nature.
So what do I think the outcome will be? Just from watching the news in the past years, it seems to be an obvious choice for sanity. It’s not just the reelection of Obama that tells me that, but the general momentum—we’re going up, not down. The old ways of greed and violence are dying out, we’ve got Obama in the house and overall, war and violence is on a decline in the world.
December 21st is a deadline which was hinted at by the stars and validated by the Mayans’ own spiritual understanding of the universe, which Western people may not fully understand due to an arrogant, mechanistic view of the universe. The Mayans, through immense skill and bravery, revealed the deadline to us. If it didn’t ring true with reality, the whole world would not even know about the mystical calendar that a vanished jungle people from the Yucatan peninsula thought up.
So what’s going to happen? If we are placing bets now, I am putting all I have on waking up on the 22nd and transforming into a being of pure light, zooming up the Pleiades and shaking hands with Isis. Metaphorically speaking, of course.
Enjoy the “apocalypse,” and realize that this is a sacred time for humanity, when the bright new future is like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis and enjoying the air for the first time in quite a while. Now’s the time to appreciate our own efforts and the efforts of those who came before us, so that most of us can now enjoy a beautiful new day in peace and with friends.
Annie Sha is a non-superstitious astrologer who is based in Boulder. She has been studying the zodiac archetypes for over ten years now and has learned from experience how the signs express themselves in people. As a lifelong Buddhist, who is grateful to Theravada, Zen and Vajrayana traditions, she likes to use meditative insight to unravel astrology. She lived in Seoul, South Korea, for three years, teaching English and writing and editing articles for the Korea Times, which is ironic as she can’t spell to save her life. Somehow it has worked out all right, thanks to spell check. Her sun is in Gemini and her moon is in Pisces. Check out her website.
