Social Media Stats that Will Put You in Child’s Pose!

Somehow 2013 is moving way to fast.

We are seeing the “billion number” and we all think that is normal. Facebook has over one billion regular users (680 million accessing from a mobile device each month). Gangnam style has been viewed over one billion times on YouTube and four billion hours are watched on YouTube each month. There are over 500 million Twitter accounts running over 1.6 billion searches per day. LinkedIn seems small with only 200 million accounts.

Yeah, this social media thing is not done growing.

What is being watched? Music videos. The top five most watched videos are all music videos, accounting for over four billion views! This should not be surprising, we are a society built upon music, it is in our soul (and our iPhones). It is why the debate continues about whether music should have a place in a music class (while you were debating that, I cranked up some M.C Yogi and shook my hips in Warrior 2). We love music and music videos. When you are thinking about making a yoga video, remember that we love music as much as you do (and think twice about what ahimsa means before you use music without permission).

Who do we love on Twitter?

It turns out that while Justin Bieber is Number 2 on YouTube, he is Number 1 on Twitter with over 34 million followers. Plus, he tweets a lot! As if that wasn’t enough, he has over 51 million “likes” on Facebook!

Do not blow this off as “I knew social media was for kids.” Think about what this means: social media is for entertainment. It is a place people go to escape.

What does that mean to you as a mission/cause oriented person who is ready to make an impact on the world?

Find your voice and use it. Entertain us, educate us, whatever you do—share from the heart. We are here and we are listening. This is an insane time in history. You are the publisher, editor, writer and marketing department. You have all of the power in the world—use that for social good.

We have crested an amazing mountain and the social bubble hasn’t popped. In many ways, it is all downhill from here. The sites have been built and even as new sites like Pinterest grow into teenagers, the challenge becomes nurturing your community with quality content. Companies that we hoped would go out of business are now earning millions and billions of dollars. These social networks empower us to communicate with each other and give us the tools to make change happen anywhere in the world. Your yoga studio is a community center, a place where people gather to share knowledge and connect to each other.

Your social presence must reflect that same image and your strategy should cultivate communication in the studio and on the various social platforms. If you haven’t taken the time to really understand the tools and how to use them, now is the time to ask yourself, “How can I teach if I don’t know how to communicate effectively?”

It turns out that your growing edge is learning, so you can start teaching off the mat as much as you do from the mat. Let your yoga practice be a guide to you on this journey, start by observing everything you see, evaluate what works and do more of it. This is your time to shine, spread your arms and hug your community!
