Video: Waylon Lewis of elephant on the resignation of Chip Wilson, Founder of Lululemon.

Chip Wilson speaks his mind…and it’s almost always bad for business. And why that’s a (mostly) good thing.

The public loves two contradictory things: we love to catch folks speaking their mind and attack them for their views, and we love folks to speak their honest views. But what happens, instead, if when public figures do speak their mind, right or wrong…if wrong, we eat them alive for it. So they cease to speak their mind. That’s more or less what’s happened here.

And so Chip Wilson‘s removal from the Board of Lululemon is less about any policy change or ethics change, and more common business sense: the guy’s mouth is costing us $$$s. And so I view this as a mostly sad thing: I like our CEOs and politicians to speak their minds, and it’s then incumbent upon us to respond thoughtfully, and if critically, fairly.

“I don’t think lululemon is looking to become more green or ethical in any way. I would welcome being proven wrong on that. I think they are a fun and hip company that makes quality merchandise, but doesn’t really care about the sourcing or the end result, and I’d love to see that change.” ~ Waylon Lewis
