Absolutely on Purpose: A Kickass Guide to Unfurling Your Brilliance Across the Universe. {Book Review}

Passion. Purpose. Vision.

These three words define Stephanie Holland’s theme to Absolutely On Purpose: A Kickass Guide to Unfurling Your Brilliance Across the Universe.

Most of us meander through life, day after day, sometimes content and sometimes wishing we had more. We go to work, take the kids to school, live an average life but have a nagging desire to be more. If you are one of those people looking for more, this is a book that may be your ticket to figuring it out.

This book is meant to be a guide to discovering what drives you in your life, and then how to channel that into your work while using some of the principles in yoga. It’s broken up into sections which first starts with The Manifesto.

The Manifesto is written to encourage readers to find what really motivates us and to not simply accept things as given. Holland implores us to take life by the handlebars and find what truly makes us happy.

The next section is a series of small articles from various people that have found their passion and how to incorporate that passion into a vision. Each piece is motivating and encouraging. Many of the people started out in one career, and after realizing their purpose was not being fulfilled, switched to something much more fulfilling.

The book then delves into what a vision is and how to use ideas pulled from our dreams and imaginings. She explains that when we are living out our purpose, we have a greater chance at making a larger and better impact on others as well as fulfilling our own happiness.

Sounds pretty cool, right?

This takes us to the last section of the book which is a workbook. Here we are faced with a group of questions to get the readers to start thinking about the things we find inspiring.

Honestly, this was a tough section for me. It’s one thing to sit and read positive, motivational stories and a whole different matter to actually plunge into the things that make oneself tick. I know for some, answering these questions will be easy and in the past there were times when a new venture or idea was on the tip of my tongue. Currently though, I find myself in a sort of limbo state, so I was unable to really complete all of the questions.

Except the cool thing about this process is that as you work your way through it, you answer each question (short and simple) on a post-it note. As you group the answers together, you can begin to visualize a theme. While I couldn’t quite finish the process, I can see where most of my interests lie. I think this is a great way to begin pulling yourself into a direction of something when you aren’t sure where to begin.

By first finding out what our passion is, this leads to what could possibly be our purpose. From this perspective we can create our vision.

Truly this is a great place to begin unraveling the ties to the mundane and start pursuing a life absolutely on purpose.
