Confessions of an Everyday Superhero. ~ Brandie Smith

everydaysuperheroes

How many times have you been asked the question, “If you could have any super power, what would it be?”

I know that when I hear this question, my head spins into a world of fantasy and adventure where there is a constant struggle between good and evil and I show up in some sleek, sexy, intimidating outfit.

“Do I want to read minds? Jump buildings in a single bound? Teleport myself to places where I can fight evil whenever needed?” I ask myself. I usually settle on teleportation because the idea of travelling and helping people all over the world is very enticing to me.

As I reflect longer on this question, I am struck by the truth that we all have the ability to make choices on a daily basis to be Superheroes. We each have the power within us to change the world—whether it’s through personal actions like changing a behavior or thought; or community action by living boldly and encouraging others to do the same.

Being a Superhero is really a state of mind, a way of being. It is waking up each day with the intention of being the biggest and brightest versions of ourselves. It is saying yes to a healthy, love-filled, authentic life that allows each of us to cultivate our unique gifts and passions. (And yes, maybe having that perfect Superhero outfit in the closet is a good idea, just in case we need extra motivation.)

Five Super Powers We Can Practice Each Day

 1. Have the Courage to be Vulnerable.

There is nothing more beautiful and perfect that showing up in the world as your true self, with all of your brilliance, flaws, and imperfections. Showing these sides of ourselves takes courage because there is vulnerability in being authentic. Just know that we are all fighting our own battles and living our truth is inspiring and gives others permission to show up in all of their glory and messiness.

 2. Set Daily Intentions.

Everyday we have the opportunity to ask for what we need.  Whether you believe in God, the Universe, or even just yourself, setting your intention helps to create a plan for your day. As my friend and mentor Richard Seaman says, “ Without having a daily intention, you’re wandering aimlessly without a plan.” Intentions help to keep us grounded and moving forward. And the best part: we can stop at any moment and create a new one.

 3. Choose the Light but Embrace the Dark.

Within each of us lives a duality, a battle between our light and shadow sides. The existence of both gives us depth and countless opportunities to grow and evolve. It is the relationship between the two that pushes us to be our greatest selves.  Seeing our shadows offers the gifts of consciously choosing the light.

 4. Be Empathetic.

One of the greatest gifts we can offer each other is support and encouragement in becoming our greatest selves. When we connect and acknowledge each other’s accomplishments and struggles, we offer strength and compassion. We also show that we truly see and honor the other person and where she is on her journey.

 5. Love.

When we approach people and situations with an open and loving heart, miracles happen.  Love can diffuse anger, celebrate joy, and create bonds of mutual understanding and community. It really is the secret (or not-so-secret) ingredient to all relationships.

So, just love.

(This may be the greatest super power of all.)
