As the recent “Catcalling” video has shown, we have a long way to go as a society before gender equality is achieved.
Speaking as a woman, I would like to believe that I am not as vulnerable as my male peers. I would like to believe that the men who act like the men in “Catcalling” are rare. However, as the recent “social experiment” video called “Drunk Girl in Public” shows, the truth can be harsh and extremely uncomfortable.
In it, a woman calling herself Jennifer pretends to be drunk and asks several men for directions to a bus on Hollywood Boulevard.
Plenty of men were willing to talk to her, but not in the way we would like. In fact, many thought they were going to score and suggested she go home with them.
As a resident of Charlottesville, Virginia, a community that is still mourning the loss of UVa undergraduate, Hannah Graham, the video hits a little too close to home. Many eyewitness accounts claim that on the night of her disappearance, Graham was visibly intoxicated while video footage shows the suspect in her murder putting his arm around her as they supposedly disappeared into the night together.
In any case, some critics are saying that there are “only” four men in the drunk girl video who appear to be taking advantage of the situation but frankly, it is four too many.
My sincere hope is that one day, things like this will be relics of the past and hopefully, by the time my daughter is old enough to drink.
