Janelle Monáe: I’m Not For Male Consumption & New Yoga Video.

Janelle Monae Vid Still

“I just think it’s so important that at a young age we teach our kids and those whose future we’re nurturing that it’s OK to love whomever it is that you love and whom you’re attracted to—and it’s OK to like a dress if you’re a boy and to like a pantsuit if you’re a girl. These are just fears that previous generations have placed upon us, or people who’ve tried to control us and make us believe that this is just bad. But I think whenever you stop the true essence of a person loving who they are—the god-given person that they’ve been blessed to be—that is a crime.” ~ Janelle Monáe

On the same day as American psychedelic soul and R&B singer/songwriter Janelle Monáe releases her new “Yoga” video, she also responds to a Twitter troll in her admirable strong feminist style.

Monáe received a comment about her trademark outfits, which largely consists of stylish crisp monochrome trouser suits, with high strappy heels.

The Twitter user, who has since turned his comments on to “private” settings tweeted, “Girl stop being so soulful and be sexy…tired of those dumbass suits…you fine but u too damn soulful man.”

The simple but powerful response from Monáe was, “Sit down… I’m not for male consumption.” It has since been retweeted thousands of times.

Monae’s “Yoga” video, which was released on Monday 13th April is a collaboration with Jidenna (Monáe’s Wondaland Records label mate). The video features dancers moving from the bedroom, into the Yoga studio, before moving onto a diner, continuing with choreographed dance moves throughout.

The hip-hop moves in the music video redefine the typical yoga poses that would normally be associated with the practice, although, at one point Monáe is seen to be levitating and reaching a state of nirvana.

Monáe, always ready to promote girl power at any chance, even seems to give a mention to the #freethenipple campaign in her lyrics, with a line in the song being, “You cannot police me, so get off my areola.”
