I Vow to Love Thee: 20 Days of Mercury in Retro.

Oh, Mercury in Retro, how I loathe thee.

I’ve put my foot, my brain and my heart in my mouth so many times during those past “Retro periods” that I am shy.

Today I’m stalling with my words at the bottom of my throat, because I don’t want to mess up or say the wrong things.

And yet, isn’t that the whole point of life—to make mistakes?

We’ll say the wrong thing at the right time, so we appear like a fool, because we are all foolish at heart. It’s in the embarrassing moments of a “whoops” that we discover our authenticity.

We’ll see that our quirkiness is lovable.

We’ll realize how our actions are not set in stone, because we are not meant to be stagnant. We are fluid in the rigidity of the earth’s gravity.

Our wisdom is formed like the red sandstones, so that layers of living settle on top of layers of experiencing: failed relationships, stolen kisses, missed train connections, landing the dream job, falling out of yoga poses in front of a crowded class and feeling the power of savasanafinally.

And, so Mercury in Retro—I may loathe thee, but I’m discovering ways to love thee.

I will take these 20 days of Retro and meet you, Mercury, in the eyes—shyly at first.

I will ask you out on a date—fill you with coffee or wine.

I’ll trip over rocks in the path and land in a puddle freshly formed from last night’s storm.

I’ll make a fool of myself—over and over again.

But I’ll do so with grace this time around, because I can—and I will!
