This poem was inspired by a person in my life who battled with chronic depression and eating disorders for a long time—her strength and bravery throughout that phase truly inspired me.
“A pearl is a beautiful thing that is produced by an injured life. It is the tear [that results] from the injury of the oyster. The treasure of our being in this world is also produced by an injured life. If we had not been wounded, if we had not been injured, then we will not produce the pearl.” ~ Stephan Hoeller

Shine.
Shine, you royal work of art—
You are more than skin and bones.
Your scars of wars
Are as beautiful
As the craters in the moon.
Shine! You blue-ribboned, red-lettered life—
Always celebrate the gift of you.
Shine! You colossal masterpiece.
Don’t hide from what you are.
Your soul colors many lives like mine.
Shine!
For you are more than the shade of your skin,
You are more than the shape of your body.
Please—
Don’t question your existence,
Don’t compromise yourself.
For you, my dear—
You are Stardust,
So shine!
