Mama Said there’d be Days like This. {Poem}

“Happiness is letting go of what you think your life is supposed to look like and enjoying it for everything that it is.” ~ Mandy Hale

Mama said there’d be days like this.

Days when the sunshine shatters the mundane light of a typical daybreak, creating starbursts of possibility across an otherwise darkened sky.

Days when we wake to love, warmth, and the smell of coffee already dripping and singing in the next room.

Moments of comfort and home—of dancing in the kitchen and letting the rain play out a melody against our bare skin as we try to remember a time when we were happier than this.

Mama said there’d be days like this.

Those times when we forget what we are supposed to be doing, because what we want to be doing has taken a drunken hold upon our hearts and refuses to let go.

Days that stretch on forever and become lost on a midnight road under the indigo stars.

Backseat kissing and drives around the languid cosmos, where everything that was before simply ceases to exist.

Days that seem torn from the pages of our dreams, yet still dirty our feet in the ecstasy of escapades well-spent.

Mama said there’d be days like this.

Days that seem impossible, moments when we spend more time crying on our knees than smiling at the sun.

Moments when we question everything and forget who we are.

Nights that break us in two, leaving us bloodied and halved upon the bare ground of a reality we never wanted to taste.

Those times in our life when the darkness is so deep, we wonder if we’ll ever see the light again.

Mama said there’d be days like this.

Mornings ripe with the cries of a baby waiting to suckle on a soft breast, the breeze blowing the scent of jasmine around the room dizzying us with a trace of love well-earned.

Sunshine soaked laughter dotting the rainbows of a backyard sprinkler, bare feet, and grassy knees.

The illusion of forever warping any sense of now, and the slow drawl of twilight against bronzed shoulders.

Evenings of fireflies and sweet tea, cicadas, and the roll of the wind through the trees as a summer storm creeps in.

Mama said there’d be days like this.

Kisses that melt away the lies of busy and fingertips that creates blossoms of forever across the blank canvas of a new love.

Midnight giggles and fresh, white sheets that linger across the curve of a hip.

Dappled moonlight and the twinkling of desire in eyes that light up the summer sky.

Days that fade into nights, and nights that stretch on into forever, until there’s nothing left but a halo of moments to hold close.

Mama said there’d be days like this.

Pearls of time that break, tangle, and tear us apart, yet bring us to our knees in their beauty.

Love as ripe as a Georgia peach, desire as strong as a thorn, and hearts that beat for only one.

It’s life, and it happens in between all those moments we thought we were living.

It happens within the blink of an eye, and suddenly we know—some things are better felt than known, some truths are better seen than heard, and some parts of this beautiful, crazy world are best experienced by jumping right in.

Yep, just like that—because Mama always said there’d be days like this.
