Although most individuals are now familiar with the term ‘Millennial,’ there is an entirely new generation of young change-makers below them that are now entering adulthood. Known as ‘Gen Z,’ this age group includes those born between the years 1997-2012, some entering their mid-twenties and others that are barely entering into their teenage years. However, these young individuals are not known to let their ages define them. Instead, Gen Z includes a melting pot of passionate individuals who are ready and willing to support and take action on causes they believe in. Continue reading to discover some of the most influential Gen Z activists.

Maya Ghazal

In recent years, the conversation surrounding refugees has become more common in the mainstream, but it has not always been met with understanding and respect. Maya Ghazal has risen as an influential figure in this conversation, breaking barriers by becoming the first female Syrian refugee pilot. Not too many years back, Maya fled from war-torn Syria, arriving in safety in the UK. Despite not knowing the English language, she fought all odds and is now an activist and public speaker bringing awareness to the stereotypes that similar refugee girls are met with.

Sophie Kabangu

2020, though a challenging year for many, sparked up the revival of the Black Lives Matter movement. Although this has been a prevalent topic for many, the events of 2020 put this conversation back into mainstream media and inspired many young activists to join the cause to amplify black voices and stories. Sophie Kabangu sticks out as one of these passionate individuals who was outraged by the discriminatory incidents taking place. She organized various Black Lives Matter rallies and continues to raise awareness for social justice issues.

Madeline Stuart

One look at a throwback episode of America’s Next Top Model proves that the fashion industry has significantly shifted its vision of beauty and diversity within the past decade, but there are many disparities that still remain. When it comes to showcasing diversity, the fashion industry still underserves people with disabilities. Madeline Stuart is a model with Down Syndrome who became a viral sensation after following her dreams of walking the runway and posing for photoshoots. Although she has made a name for herself as a model, she also advocates for diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry, shifting people’s preconceived notions of disabilities.

The aforementioned names are only a snapshot of the powerful force of individuals making up the scheme of Gen Z. As more of these individuals become empowered by their passions, we will undoubtedly see continual support of various causes and a greater call to inclusivity across the board.
