Buddhism hearts Science (at Yale). Donald Lopez

~ via Steven Deedon

For those who missed any of Donald Lopez’s Terry Lectures at Yale, on Buddhism and Science, The Real videostreams for the first two talks are now online, and the other two coming up at http://www.yale.edu/terrylecture/ .  The first two talks give an introduction with examples of the Western colonial misunderstandings of Buddhism, but Lopez really shifts into third gear with part three, the discussion Karma and Evolution, and part four, Buddhism and Neuroscience is downright thrilling.

For those who may be interested: after one of these talks, I asked Phyllis Granoff, who oversees South Asian Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at Yale, to recommend a good survey of Indian Philosophy before/contemporaneous with the origins of Buddhism.

She recommended A Critical Survey of Indian Philosophy, which I think is by Chandradhar Sharmar.  You can look at it through Google Books if you can’t pick up a copy. ~ Steve
