Editorial Internship: elephantjournal.com & Walk the Talk Show with Waylon Lewis

Having won numerous national awards in social and new media and environmental, spiritual, yoga and wellness coverage, and with 15 million readers a month and counting, interning with elephant journal can be a great start to a career in media.

elephantjournal.com’s internship is for responsible self-starters, eager learners, and open communicators who respect the written word and are inspired by elephant’s mission of working (and playing) to create enlightened society. You will be working with our writers and editors to continue to reinvent journalism within a new media context.

Skills you will learn: blogging, social media, journalism ethics, the mindful life.

Internship responsibilities include article pitch meetings, editing and social media, along with other projects and field trips (to print shops, other online journals). Trainings are led by elephant journal founder and editor in chief, Waylon Lewis and our local editors,

Interns will be immersed in an active new media culture and spend a good amount of time directly in communication with all our editors. No busy work.

We train hard and we expect diligence.

Ideal applicant will have meticulous organizational skills and follow-through, and is comfortable with deadlines. Excellent written communication skills are a must (you should be horribly irritated by bad grammar, ALL CAPS, “its” when “it’s” is intended…).

Applicants should be familiar with elephantjournal.com, past issues of elephant magazine (we can give you a few copies if unfamiliar) and have a personal interest in aspects of “the mindful life,” journalism ethics and new and social media. Internship includes some meals, field trips and events. Former interns have a long record of getting jobs in new and social media, and we’re happy to help with placement if you’ve earned a recommendation.

The intern will assist the editorial team in gathering legal images and authors’ text, organizing submissions, copy-editing content, and participate in weekly meetings. Working in a focused, busy, environmentally-responsible atmosphere, interns can learn about all aspects of running a blog (advertising, social media, new media, events, WordPress, SEO), give input on elephant’s content and contribute reviews and articles. elephant’s internship is hands-on.

You will also have the option to participate in Elephant Academy free of charge:

You can pay 4000 bucks for similar online training programs. Lots of folks do. Or you can pay much less for a program that isn’t about making profits off of you, but is rather about training the next generation of changemakers and mindful communicators. The difference in value? We actually do it, day after day. You’ll get intensive training in social media, journalism, editing and writing.

The internship requires 15 hours/week (most of which will be scheduled in our downtown Boulder office with an editor so you can see the ins and outs of running an online magazine business). You will be responsible for one required original, researched article a week in addition to other responsibilities.

The internship will begin on January 4, 2015 and will be four months long.

Qualifications: Current college or graduate student interested in social media and journalism who is mindful and inspired by elephant’s mission. We expect you to be accountable and responsible. It’s ideal if you’re getting university credit. Must be local to Boulder. Must have a laptop and a reliable connection to good wifi.

Application Instructions: Applicants will be accepted on a rolling basis. If interested, send your resume and a brief cover letter explaining why you’d be a good fit for the internship position to [email protected] with the subject bar “Boulder Intern Application” and fill out the application form.

Send questions to [email protected].
