Flow

We already talked about how reality is created in our brain. We “decide” how we are going to act from our core. Now the question is:

What is the role of motivation in this mental plan?

Let’s start by eliminating the word “motivation” and substitute it for “high performance”. Motivation speaks about an emotional state. What we are looking for from the mind is a state of being. So, the answer we seek is;

– how can we keep ourselves in a state of constant high performance?

The first thing that must be addressed is the myth of “the rewards”; I do something, and I receive a prize for doing it. Therefore, I feel motivated to do that something. This is false since it throws us into a state of monotony. It is proven that this system of rewards only works with operational and short-term tasks since, in the end, this system ends up destroying creativity.

High performance exists when something matters to you and you can have control over it.

Let’s think about it this way: if I have a solid mental core and a clear visualization of my end objective, I begin to generate the goals that will lead me to those achievements. These objectives must be tangible, clear and under your influence (you must make sure that your actions will be responsible for the result).

For example, a poor family goal is “to have my partner happy by my side”. This objective is not under your influence and is intangible. In spite of your actions, you cannot guarantee the happiness of another person since this depends entirely on the other individual. The correct form would be: “Being the most understanding, loyal, and loving person with my partner”. It is a tangible goal since you can define the actions that lead you to be understanding, loyal and affectionate. At the same time, it is a goal that depends on one hundred percent on your actions and is under your control and influence.

These objectives should be very clear and correctly stated. They will be fragmented in the challenges of your day-to-day, and these challenges are the ones that make it easier to keep you in a high-performance state.

Tips to generate Objectives:

They must be consistent with your principles. (They must be coherent with your core)

They must be under your direct influence. (The final result depends on your actions)

They must be tangible (You can see how your life will be impacted when you achieve it)

Tips to generate Challenges:

They must be calculable. (To be able to measure the final result)

They must be realizable. (To take into account your abilities and the resources for realization)

They must be directly connected to the objective. (How will meeting this challenge bring me closer to my goal?)

To generate high performance, the key lays in a concept that we will call “flow”.

The state of flow is when we are in mental harmony following the path and achieving our challenges. This generates a natural sensation of our journey through life as it would be the flow of a river.

The flow is the result of important challenges, awareness of our abilities, and resilience.

The key is to establish challenges that provoke us but are within the reach of our abilities. In this way, we will be advancing step by step to achieve our objectives, naturally. At the same time, going back to the river analogy; understanding that there will be rocks and obstacles on the road is crucial. Here comes to play the resilience, which is simply the result of a strong mental core that allows us to adapt and face situations. In this way, we can allow the flow to continue on its way.

Mentally, the motivation is nothing more than staying in a high-performance state;

Knowing my abilities and posing coherent and important challenges. What will be the steps that will take me to achieve these real objectives? To this is added a strong mental core that allows me to have resilience when facing challenges. Thus maintaining my journey through life in a constant state of flow.
