As A Woman You Should Agree With Me–But I Don’t

I guess it doesn’t take a wardrobe malfunction to cause a ruckus about the Super Bowl Half  Time show. Shakira and Jennifer Lopez (J Lo) teamed up to perform at Hard Rock Stadium during the half.  Both women paying tribute to the Latino/a heritage which is Miami, FL and it caused quite the stir.

It seems many people forgot there was a football game yesterday- the 49ers, the Chiefs- ring any bells? I opened Facebook this morning and post after post was about the halftime.  News and entertainment outlets were commenting about the show- some said it was phenomenal while some outlets were on the other end of the extreme calling it damaging to young girls.

How is it damaging to young girls? To see two women who have taken care of their bodies into their 40’s and 50’s after having children. Women who are financially independent.  The role of singer, performer, mother, girlfriend/spouse do not need to be mutually exclusive.  Women do not need to give up on their sexuality once they reach a certain age or have a child.

I dared to express this idea out loud today and the response blew me away.  “You’re a woman you should agree with me.”

“Yes, I’m a woman but I do not agree with you.  You have your opinion and I have mine,” I said with a smile.

Just as women are allowed to have more than one role in their life we are also allowed to have more than one opinion which is not predetermined by my gender.  Regardless of gender, age, physical appearance think for yourselves; for your own ideas, respect others who do not have the same ideas that you do, but please do not try to bully or shame them into agreeing with you.
