I finished Dawson’s Creek last month, and I got over it just last week.
It is an emotionally beautiful show.
All the emotional scenes looked and felt better with the water stream in the background. Symbolisation of emotions with the water was always in sync—conflicts would come with the storms in the water stream, beginnings would begin with glimmering sun rays on the water, introspection would come with calm water, dancing would occur under the moonlight with its reflection on the water, and more.
The water stream has played many important roles in the show, sometimes aiding in the background and sometimes single-handedly conveying complex feelings, like a main character. Also, the water stream was the home for all the characters—it welcomed them, always. It supported them, bid them farewell for growth, and shaped them positively and negatively for life—and they all kept coming back to it.
As all stems up from the root, the water stream was the root for the show and its characters.
As the show was about adulting and teenagers, naturally there were many life lessons, important ones, that we all keep learning, keep adopting, and then, naturally, keep forgetting. Over time, we are reminded again, and on every relearning, it makes us think about life and what not.
So here are some quotes from the show, which may make you think of the lessons you need, or are looking for:
From Pacey
>> Enough people say that stuff about you and you start to believe it yourself.
>> Reminds one why one should surround oneself with kind people. In the hustle, we often ignore or underestimate the kindness around us, as growth inspired from harsh criticism gives the feel of a proper struggle and struggles are glorified, valuable, and the only way to hustle. We all need kind people, though, because keeping ourselves motivated and positive is a difficult job to do single-handedly. And we all should try to be kind in what we think, in what we say, and what we do.
From Jen
>> The important thing is for you to believe in something, because I promise you that. that belief will keep you warm at night, and I want you to feel safe always.
>> Tells us the importance of faith, in ourselves, in our partner, in our relations, or anywhere else where we need it. We kind of naturally have faith in childhood and when things are going right, but it is hard to find when things are often going wrong. Some days, it makes a fool of us, on most nights, it makes us feel safe.
From Grams
>> What I like most about those movies is the fact that no matter how far off the pedestal the character fell, they always got a second chance. Forgiveness is one of the greatest gifts the Lord has given us, with it comes understanding.
>> Second chances remind us nothing is permanent, the good or the bad. What matters is, for the sake of our peace, if at the present we are moving in the direction we want to. And peace is always a good reason to forgive.
From Joey
>> We watch a movie, preferably a Spielberg film, find the appropriate life correlation, and then we pat ourselves on the back for being so clever. You know, as much as our perception is right on, our honesty is severely lacking.
>> This tells us something about when life situations are at extremes, that it is hard to be honest at extremes. Our perception can be deceiving, different from reality, if we are stuck at a place for too long or if we feel too much, strongly. We see what we want to see.
>> Sometimes we fight our fathers, and they respect us. And sometimes we fight them and, well, we lose them forever. You have to decide how you want to live your life. You know what you can tolerate, and what you’re willing to lose.
>> This is the constant dilemma of life—to compromise for something or go without it free. Answers are often different. A single choice may not suit always.
From Dawson
>> A soul mate is someone who you carry with you forever. It’s the one person who knew you and accepted you and believed in you before anyone else did or when no one else would. And no matter what happens, you’ll always love her.
>> This reminds us of the simplest meaning of soul mate, for when we are stuck in the web of emotions or relations, some people naturally get us well, some people learn to know us with time, some understand us because of the similarities, but in all the cases comes along a simple and forever-for-our-soul love we often find in friendships and relationships, which may not stay forever or are always active, but we carry the love found, with us always in many forms. And it helps so much to know that their heart is still beating on this earth, probably carrying us too with them. If in a doubt, imagine a moment where your long lost friend is not on Earth, maybe you will miss the hope that was just by that person’s living on Earth.
From Jack
>> Did it ever occur to you that you’re so caught up in trying to make the right choice that you’ve never stopped to consider the possibility that there may not be a right choice, or a wrong choice, just a bunch of choices?
>> If there is just a good choice and a bad choice, we just know in seconds, which one is the bad choice. We always know in our heart or in the back of mind about the good and the bad. But often, we have choices, and we want to put the right tag on the choice, which will meet all our parameters, and if we do not find it on time, we get caught up in the web of thinking, analysing, overthinking, doubting, and maybe more. So just pick a choice, start from anywhere, and hopefully, you will be able to change your path in future for the unmet parameters.
From Joey
>> To love someone when there is no chance of that love ever thriving…that is romance.
This tells us about romance, which is something we create in the moment. Romantics who love rivers, they will find joy in talking about a drama with a water stream, like it was all about the water stream, knowing that the description is very dreamy and not likely to thrive as a real review, but that is romance—it’s in the small things.
