It’s no coincidence that Saint Teresa of Avila compares the soul to a beautiful gemstone.

From the first time I held crystals, I could sense their subtle yet alluring energy, and I experienced their healing properties. The good news is that you do not have to be especially intuitive to benefit from the power of crystals—they do the work for you.

Crystals work on the body’s bioenergetics field to calm you and enhance growth on a personal and spiritual level. What’s fascinating is that no two crystals are alike, and each has a unique energetic vibration.

Also, crystals work with the chakras. Chakra is a Sanskrit word that means “wheel” and references the energy systems in the body. Just like with the wheels of your car, you want all of your inner wheels to be working effectively and in balance.

While there are over 100 chakra systems, in yogic traditions there are seven major chakras, each of which corresponds with a major body function. Spirituality is connected to several of the chakras. The most prominent ones are the Third Eye Chakra (or Anja, located between the eyes) and the Crown (or Sahasrara, located at the top of your head).

You can open and balance the chakras in many different ways: meditation, sound healing and vibration, and of course working with crystals. The nice thing is that any of these can be used on their own or simultaneously for even greater impact.

Everyone responds differently to crystals and experiences their energies uniquely. For instance, while some people swear by amber, though, personally, it is not a stone that I resonate with.

Here are my five favorite crystals that can enhance your spiritual journey:

1. Amethyst

When you think about spiritual development, the color purple, reflected in this beautiful gem may instantly come to mind. Purple is part of alchemy (think St. Germain and his violet healing flame or Archangel Zadkiel and his twin flame Holy Amethyst that clears old karma).

I experience amethyst energy in much the same way; as a kind of heat. Hands down, amethyst is one of most spiritual of gemstones. To enhance the power of amethyst in your spiritual practice, try adding an affirmation such as: “I am surrounded by the purple light of love.”

2. Moonstone

I would rework this: The moonstone is a great crystal to connect with and set intentions. Especially if you connect with lunar energy and love to stare at the waxing moon.

It is a beautiful white crystal that is a lunar powerhouse, connecting you with divine feminine qualities, such as intuition. It can also help you to fully connect with your authenticity. A good moonstone affirmation: “I follow my intuition without fear.”

3. Celestite

I love celestite, especially in raw geode form. It is lovely to look at. Imagine a deep blue color, just like a summer sky. Celestite is aptly named. I often use this heavenly stone to connect with the celestial/angelic realms and as a way to invite in higher spiritual wisdom.

Celestite makes a great centerpiece for a spiritual growth grid. It can also be your focal point for prayer or meditation. Angelite is another great option in this range. My favorite celestite affirmation: “I connect with the angels and other Divine sources of inspiration.”

4. Quartz

Clear quartz is one of the first stones I ever purchased and is one of my most widely used stones. This clear-to-white-colored crystal emits high vibrations that increase spiritual growth, wisdom, and discernment. Due to its high vibration, quartz amplifies any intention (whether spiritual or otherwise).

In addition to clear quartz, there are also smoky varieties and manmade stones such as rainbow and aqua aura quartz. One especially interesting variety is Leumarian seed quartz. The story of Leumarian quartz is that these crystals were left behind on earth for the express purpose of connecting people with the greater universe. My crystal affirmation: “I am pure, radiant light.”

5. Carnelian

Take one look at carnelian and you may experience a feeling like that of watching the setting sun. Hues of orange, brown, and reds abound. Carnelian is an action crystal that connects emotions and inner life to the greater world.

These insights enhance spirituality by allowing us to move forward passionately and share our strengths. It may also instill a sense of calm and peace as an aid to meditation. A great affirmation for carnelian: “I share my gifts with enthusiasm and grace.”
