Not so long ago President Biden introduced his nominee for the United States Supreme Court, Ketanji Brown Jackson, with the following words:

“For too long our government and our courts haven’t looked like America. I believe it’s time we have a court that reflects the full talents and greatness of our nation, with a nominee of extraordinary qualifications.”

Today, that has become a reality.

Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has been confirmed to the United States Supreme Court with a vote of 53-47. When Vice President Kamala Harris read the vote aloud there was a standing ovation in the senate chambers. She is making history before our eyes as being the first Black woman and the first public defender to serve on the highest court of the United States.

She was supported by all 50 Democrats and three Republicans.

While she is the first Black woman to serve on the court, she is the sixth woman to hold a position on SCOTUS.

Visibly emotional during the reading of the vote, Vice President Harris noted as she left the Capitol building that she was “overjoyed, deeply moved.” It’s no wonder, considering that she also made history with her own office in the Biden administration.
