What is a smile?

What is a smile?

I read the headlines in the papers,
Detailing Prince Harry’s capers,
I smiled, a wry smile, maybe, not a full blooded one,
For really, who’s interested in another prodigal son?
All the media screamed the same story,
Of how our music was making history,
Bagging the Golden Globe award, it had never happened before,
Natu, Natu, the song that was scorching the floors.
I smiled, a smile of pride,
But a small smile, not too wide.
The wife came home from a hens do,
With stories of who was doing what with who,
The antics of an eighty year old spinster took centre stage,
With accounts of her doings with a man half her age.
I smiled at the thought of this improbable relationship.
I smiled, a hesitant smile that just stayed on my lip.
Three smiles, one hesitant, one wry, one not too wide,
All three tentative, as if they could’nt decide:
That though they were small,
Should they have come out at all?
For they all arose from something heard, something read,
No feel to them , just some thoughts in the head.
As I awoke at the break of dawn,
And lovingly gazed at her languid yawn,
Her morning hair in glorious disarray,
The little, luxurious curls now touched with grey.
I smiled, a smile of contentment, as she lay beside,
A smile that emerged from deep down inside.
My ailing child was on an extended tour,
Searching for an elusive medical cure.
When she returned, she had a glow on her face,
Of her ailment I could see no trace.
I smiled, a smile of thanks, of happiness,
A smile of affection, of tenderness.
My father lay ill, very ill, gasping for breath,
Just biding his time awaiting his death.
And in his last moments he said to me,
“Son, I’ve donated my eyes so someone else can see.”
I smiled with affection, at his generosity,
Eyes filled with love, he smiled back at me.
Three smiles, of warmth, relief and happiness,
Of bonding, of love, of togetherness.
True smiles, pure smile, ones you cannot disguise,
For these start a the lips and reach the eyes,
Smiles that emanate not from the thoughts in your head,
But from feelings that capture your heart instead.

Its’ called LOVE.
