Or, should I say the d*mn Ukrainian flooding?
There are kind humans. Everywhere. You don’t need to look far. Just the other day someone called an ambulance for someone I know and love deeply, and we’ll never know who it was. The kindness of that human assured the safety of someone I love.
Similarly, I was brought to my (metaphorical) knees at the kindness of the humans helping other humans after the Kakhovka Dam was destroyed this week on June 6, 2023. The destruction caused extreme flooding to the area and the extent of the damage is yet to be fully seen. Watching the rescue efforts through the news and through photographs was heart-wrenching and heart-warming because it was the human side of war that we were witnessing.
It was simply people helping people.
And it was (and is) magnificent to see in this world that doesn’t always portray the best of human nature.
Being a vegan, and someone who believes in the preciousness of all life, I was also touched by the generous acts of people helping to rescue animals who were lost in the floodwaters. Through tears in my eyes, I was reminded of the goodness we all carry inside us and that can be mustered at the times we need it most. Or, in this case, when other beings need it from us.
Here are a few examples of animals being saved from the Kherson Region in Ukraine after the Flooding:

May it be of benefit and may we all stop, pause, and recognize the beauty of life around us. Smile at a stranger tomorrow, because you never know if they might be rescuing your hedgehog next week.
