For years, I was so busy taking care of everyone else that I didn’t stop to think about what I wanted.
I focused on raising kids, running a household, and ensuring everything got done.
And then, life shifted. My kids were grown, and suddenly, I had space—space to think, space to reflect, and space to ask myself a question I had been avoiding: What now?
At first, I wasn’t sure how to answer it. I had dreams that had been sitting on the shelf for years, collecting dust while I told myself, I’ll get to that later. But later had arrived, and those dreams were still there, waiting for me.
And that’s when I realized: I had been lying to myself. I told myself I had missed my chance. That if it hadn’t happened by now, it wasn’t going to happen. That people like me didn’t get to chase big dreams.
But here’s the truth: it wasn’t too late. It was right on time.
The Myth Of “Too Late”
One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is that if we haven’t achieved something by a certain age, we never will. That our dreams have an expiration date. That reinvention is for other people.
I used to believe that, too. But here’s what I finally understood: there is no deadline for growth, for change, for becoming the person you’ve always wanted to be.
Think about it:
>> You’ve spent years figuring out what truly matters to you.
>> You know yourself better than ever before.
>> You’ve overcome challenges that have made you stronger, more resilient, and more capable than you probably even realize.
I wasn’t starting from scratch—I was starting with everything I had already learned.
The Mindset Shift That Changed Everything
The biggest thing that was holding me back wasn’t my age. It wasn’t time. It wasn’t external circumstances.
It was me.
For years, I held the belief that I wasn’t qualified to chase my dreams. That I wasn’t good enough or ready enough to do the things I secretly wanted to do.
But one day, it hit me: the only thing stopping me was me.
So, I made a decision. Instead of focusing on all the reasons I couldn’t follow my dreams, I started asking: Why not me? What if I stopped waiting for the “perfect” moment and just took the next small step?
Small Shifts That Lead To Big Change
Following your dreams doesn’t mean flipping your life upside down overnight. It doesn’t mean you have to quit your job, move across the country, or completely change who you are. It starts with small, intentional shifts that align your life with who you want to become.
Here’s what helped me:
>> Rewriting the story in my head: Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” I started saying, “I’m figuring this out.” Instead of saying, “I’m too old,” I started saying, “I bring valuable experience to the table.”
>> Embracing being a beginner: I gave myself permission to be terrible at first. To try. To fail. To learn. And to enjoy the process instead of waiting for perfection.
>> Surrounding myself with inspiration: I started reading books, listening to podcasts, and connecting with people who had successfully followed their dreams later in life. If they could do it, why not me?
>> Taking small, consistent action: Even five minutes a day adds up. Tiny steps lead to big momentum.
It’s Your Time
If you’ve been feeling stuck, wondering if it’s too late to follow your dreams, let me remind you: you are capable of so much more than you think.
There is no rule that says you have to stop dreaming at a certain age. No deadline. There is no expiration date on the things that light you up.
So ask yourself: What do I really want? And then take one small step toward making it happen today.
Because the best time to start? It’s not 20 years ago. It’s not some day in the future.
It’s right now.
