As I’m writing this from my little corner of Minneapolis, the helicopters are circling above my neighborhood.
It’s been a tough week for my friends and my neighbors. We’re angry. We’re shocked. We’re overwhelmed. We’re tired. We want to help, but we’re not sure where to turn and what to do.
Many of us are putting our bodies on the line by showing up at protests to show Trump’s administration that we do not support the ICE occupation of our city, and what is happening to our neighbors.
Others are newly-minted keyboard warriors, sharing the videos and breaking news updates so that they reach a larger audience. People are lining up to be physical shields against ICE as kids enter and leave schools. There are people offering rides, donating food, and picking up dry cleaning. My neighbors are making a point to each as often as they can at immigrant-owned restaurants to support them.
We are finding ways to help. And if you look, you’ll see the helpers…everywhere.
Everyone is helping by finding their niche, leaning on their talents, and using what they have to hand. Artists are going to art.
Every resistance needs a good anthem, and here’s the one that I think meets the moment:
Granted, I’m a long-time fan as someone raised in an Irish family. But let’s set my bias aside and just appreciate the fact that The Dropkick Murphy‘s—known for their activism—have taken a popular song from their catalog and reworked it to be a new anthem in 2025/2026.
“Citizen I.C.E.” is a new version of their 2005 song “Citizen C.I.A.”
I won’t list all the lyrics here, but they don’t hold back. Whatsoever.
2026 might bring a resurgence of protest music, if things continue as they are. Here are a few more great examples of new & recent songs to add to your resistance playlist:
>> Good vs. Ice by Jesse Welles. This is simple. Short. Pointant. And has some excellent use of irony.
>> Beacon of Hope by D. Santos (feat. HeartyBoy612). Be aware of language here, fair warning.
>> I Don’t Want War (I Want Beauty Today) by Calum Baird. This is the kind of song that hits your heart and doesn’t leave. He says, “Inspired by Woody Guthrie, Billy Bragg and early Dylan, this is a pointed, urgent anti-war protest song — direct, unapologetic, and rooted in folk’s long tradition as a vehicle for resistance.” and you can feel it.
>> I also want to highlight the new group formed in Minneapolis called “Singing Resistance.” There’s a beautiful video of them. From their description:
A new group to mobilize singers into direct action in Minneapolis has been formed. It’s called “Singing Resistance.” The first singing vigil was held on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2026 in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, MN. More than 300 singers showed up to march and serenade areas of the city that have been highly impacted by ICE. Stay tuned for more as the group establishes a social media presence and more events pop up.
Song Lyrics From The Video: This is for our neighbors who are locked inside. Together, we will abolish ICE!
