When it comes to extraneous grooming items, shaving creme often comes up on the list.
It is one of those things that we can live without—in a pinch, I have used soap or even hair conditioner! However, each substitute has its drawbacks: the former tended to dry my skin out and the latter would leave my skin feeling a bit too greasy. Plus, it doesn’t help that most of them tend to be scented.
Now that fall is here, and the temperature is dropping, my once greasy-as-a-frying-pan skin is drying down a bit. Soon it will be cold, and my legs tend to suffer the most. (Legs don’t have very many oil glands to begin with, and even people with ultra-oily skin often suffer from from painful dry skin there.)
Therefore, when I came up with an all-natural shaving cream that left my skin feeling soft and well-moisturized, without being too heavy, I was overjoyed! It was one of those things that more or less happened by accident. (I was actually trying to make a body cream, and decided it might work as shaving cream, after seeing an expensive all-natural shaving cream at my local health-food store, with similar ingredients.)
The best thing is, this shaving cream only has two ingredients, and anyone can make it. (Note to guys: this is great for faces, too.)
So, what are you waiting for? Here’s the recipe:
1/2 cup of cocoa butter
1/2 coconut oil
Lavender essential oil (optional)
~
1. Melt the cocoa butter and oil in a small saucepan. Avoid boiling it—it should be warm, but not steaming.
2. Use a wooden spoon to mix them together.
3. Remove from heat, add 10-20 drops of essential oil (if using), and let it cool until the mixture becomes solid.
4. Using a handheld electric mixer, mix this together until fluffy. (Note: just skip this step if you don’t have a mixer.)
5. Decant into a container.
6. All done!
.
Note: this will become liquid if you take it into a hot shower or bath. Since I like to shave my legs last, I keep it in the medicine cabinet and apply it after I’ve washed myself and turned off the water. This works out well, since it’s more environmentally-friendly to turn off the water while shaving.
