Do not stay in your place.

Furniture has a place,
and you are not a rug, a sofa, or a lamp.

You have a will.

You are not meant to be rolled up
and stored away
when you no longer match the décor.

It is not your place to please the eyes
or warm the feet of others.
It is not your place to protect
the surfaces you cover.
It is not your place to collect
the mud and dust that others trample in
only to be beaten or sucked clean.

You are not meant to involuntarily be
a person’s source of comfort and rest.
It is not your place to wait for others
to spend time with you.
It is not your place to cushion
weary bodies and stiff backs
only to be deemed uncomfortable
after supporting their weight for so long.

You are not meant to adjust your level
of brightness based on another’s preference.
It is not your place to provide light on command.
It is not your place to ease another’s darkness,
only to to be left helpless having to rely on others to change your bulb.

You are not a rug, a sofa, or a lamp.
Your life is not a living room.

Do not stay in your place.

You are not meant to stay—
you are meant to grow and move.
You are meant to change.
