Integrity and Trust at Work

Simon Sendak defines trust as the most important trait in a work mentor or colleague. What if the leader’s values and integrity differs from the organization’s? Read on for effective ways to deal with an uncertain work environment as a leader.

Red Flags

If you are a seasoned leader with an exceptional work history, and you feel something is not right at your current employer, it probably is not. You need to understand the red flags and be aware. If common statements include, “Well, that’s how we do it around here,” it’s a sign of insular thinking.

Lack of respect for any employee or special treatment for a privileged few, are also warning signs. Also, pay attention to the turnover rate, especially if your position is “at will.” High turnover in leadership or in general is another red flag something is not quite right.

Lack of consistency

Are Human Resources’ rules inconsistent, depending upon the employee? Is it difficult to counsel or coach a staff member? If you answer yes to these questions, then HR and senior leadership don’t seem to be calling the shots at work.

Look for other influencers, cliques, and employees with the power. This is another sign that the work culture is lacking consistency and healthy organizational leadership.

Unhealthy boundaries

Employees that retire or leave and still maintain unhealthy boundaries with current employees are other warning signs. For example, obtaining access to secured areas and using work resources for personal needs are not customary.

These entitled behaviors are suspect and can lead to even greater privileges for people with an unhealthy attachment to the workplace.

Misinformation and the Rumor Mill

Call it what you will; misinformation, lying, or manipulation. When the truth is not the day-to-day expectation, it is a sign of a very unhealthy work environment. Complacency is very quiet, especially when fear from other employees might be widespread.

Listen to your instincts and look for a company that values your skills, principles, and integrity .

Life’s too short not to be happy at work!
