Confused About the Third Eye? Uncover What It REALLY Is and Isn’t!
While it’s interesting to understand ‘What the Third Eye is’, it’s even more important to understand ‘What the Third Eye is Not’. So before we understand all about the third eye, we will go through some misconceptions, that many of us may have about the third eye.
Third Eye Misconceptions –
The third eye is not a physical eye or any other body part that may be tangible; instead, it represents the inner eye of wisdom that is gained only after enough expansion in one’s consciousness.
Some people think that the pineal gland is the third eye.
Well, it’s like calling the brain and the mind one.
The brain is the physical part of the body while the mind is not the physical part of the body. There’s the conscious mind and the subconscious mind and it’s a study in itself.
A Neurologist studies the matters of the brain and the nervous system while the mind and its aspects are studied in-depth by a psychologist. Neurologists and Psychologists are two separate professions and require separate study for attaining specialization.
Similarly, the pineal gland and the third eye are not exactly the same.
The pineal gland is the physical part of the body. It is a tiny gland in the brain that’s located beneath the back part of the corpus callosum.
While the pineal gland is studied by neurologists, the third eye has long been studied by many Spiritual Masters that have walked on Earth. Spiritual teachers, in different religions, have referred to the third eye in different ways.
The Bible (Christianity) talks about the Third Eye –
‘The light of the body is the eye. If therefore, thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.’ ~ Matthew 6:22
Buddhism
The Lotus Sutra in Buddhism mentioned the third eye in its own way.
‘And at that moment there issued a ray of light from within the point between the eyebrows of the Lord. It extended over eighteen hundred thousand Buddha-fields…so that all those Buddha-fields appeared wholly illumined by its radiance.’
Hinduism
The Rishis and Munis of Ancient India talked about Chakras in much detail.
The Indian Rishis considered the area in the middle of the brows to be the Ajna Chakra (the chakra of the Third Eye).
Now, if the physical gland was itself the third eye, there was no need for the study of the subtle body aspects like the chakras and there would have been no spiritual teachers talking about the third eye for thousands of years now.
In the times when Yoga was developed, the consciousness of the people was very high. The need for Yoga would have never come or Yoga would have never been developed if the third eye could be opened by the then Chikitsaks (Doctors were called Chikitsaks in Sanskrit).
What is the Third Eye?
As stated previously, the third eye is the inner light of wisdom that gives one the ability to see beyond what the two eyes can see.
Only when one’s consciousness raises enough and the third eye opens, one is able to perceive more than what a normal human mind can comprehend.
Opening the third eye is not child’s play. As opposed to many videos on the internet that tell you the different ways the third eye can be opened quickly, I would like to push you to think logically and wonder, ‘were the spiritual teachers (appearing in different religions) fools to spend their entire lives working on their consciousness and trying to reach the point where the third eye opens?’
Opening the third eye requires immense sadhana (the right spiritual practices under the direction of the Perfect Spiritual Master over many years) to reach a point in consciousness where one’s perspective widens infinitely. (Do we need a Spiritual Master, really?) Also, the third eye is something that must be reached from inside of us, not from the outside ‘coz that’s the only way to open the eye that’s not outside the body.
‘Look within. You are the world’ ~ J. Krishnamurti
An open third eye blesses you with spiritual experiences as opposed to only the revelation of spiritual knowledge, and the real spiritual experience is the only drug that you want to consume to remain in an ecstatic state all the time.
Why is it called the third eye?
Humans typically have two eyes through which they can view the world. When the two eyes are focused at one point between the eyebrows under the guidance of the Perfect Spiritual Master, a single eye is opened (Third Eye) (refer: ‘if thine eye be single’ in the Bible).
This power to see beyond what the two eyes can see gives it the name — the Third Eye.
The Function of the Third Eye in Our Lives: A Personal Example
A distant friend of mine was getting married. At the point when I came to be familiar with it, I understood that the man that she was getting hitched to, was not the right one.
I informed my friend’s parents in advance. Her parents checked everything, but they didn’t find anything.
I saw it once more when I went to visit her at one of her events before D-Day. This time, I let her know. She thought the man was madly in love with her, just the way she was in love with him.
She finally tied the knot with that man.
Just a few months into the marriage, she found out that the man was cheating on her. He also got her family to spend a lot of money with all the dowry they gave to him.
Now let me disclose to you that this realization did not dawn upon me in just a day or a month or a year. It took me 25 years of a spiritual journey and spiritual practices under a Perfect Spiritual Master that made me reach this point in consciousness today.
Understand, that Spirituality is not a sprint. It’s a marathon. The next level reveals itself only when one has reached a certain point in consciousness. And, it takes time. So let us take a deep breath and become a student of life leading ourselves to our evolution and expanding our consciousness continuously and consistently.
‘The higher the consciousness of a person, the more of the creator he becomes’
