Low-voltage micro circuit breakers (MCBs) use just air to put out the arc. The “arc chutes,” which are a sequence of parallel metal plates that are mutually insulated and function to cool and divide the arc, are a feature of these circuit breakers. The arc is cooled by being split up into smaller arcs, which also raises the arc voltage and serves as an additional resistance to limit the current passing through the circuit breaker. The current-carrying components near the contacts allow the magnetic force of a current path to readily deflect the arc into the arc chutes, but permanent magnets or magnetic blowout coils (used on circuit breakers for bigger ratings) can also achieve the same. The number of plates in the arc chute is established by the short-circuit.
