Music Review – The Magnetic Fields, Distortion.

“Distortion” is Stephin Merritt’s eighth album under the moniker The Magnetic Fields. On Distortion, Merritt transforms his normal guitar, piano, cello, ukulele and accordion into a woozy feedback-drenched chamber group, admittedly searching for the “shoegazer” sound of The Jesus and Mary Chain and My Bloody Valentine. Merritt’s hilarious signature lovesick odes are delivered either by his own cheeky, theatrical baritone (Ian Curtis meets Frank Sinatra) or by his female counterpart, Shirley Simms (who was also prominent on Fields’ brilliant 69 Love Songs). “I gotta get too drunk to dream/cause dreaming only makes me blue/I gotta get too drunk to dream because I only dream of you”
