Brush with Fame on Election Day

I voted by mail early so on the big day, I wanted to do something to be a part of the action. My office is only 2 blocks from one of our local Obama campaign headquarters, so I dropped in there and asked if they could still use a volunteer.

They gave me a list of numbers to call to encourage people to vote. They were all names of registered democrats so it was a friendly call.  All of the people I spoke with were so excited and happy that the “get out the vote” efforts were happening even if it was their 4th call of the day from one of us volunteers.

But then, guess who stopped by . . . Gloria Steinem!

She was very low key but her appearance did cause a stir, followed by a flurry of posing for photographs. I would have loved to have a picture of me (wearing my Obama Mama t-shirt) with Gloria, but I left that to the volunteers who had worked for months rather than a late comer to the party like myself.  Still, it was exciting to see her in person and it did the trick.  I really felt like I had participated in the process even though it was a relatively small gesture.

The other perk was that it provided a springboard for me to talk to my 11 year old daughter about who Gloria Steinem is and a bit about the feminist movement. True to her pre-teen attention span, the moment passed quickly, but I think she learned a thing or two.
