Sometimes it’s just a movie kind of night.
Perhaps it’s raining, or you’ve biked 20 miles and you’re drained but still want to be entertained. Instead spending 30 minutes rifling through Netflix suggestions or standing in front of the Redbox staring at all the bad selections available, I suggest one of these go-to summer classics. Perhaps they’ll spark a desire for a last minute sun-filled adventure of your own.
5. Wet Hot American Summer
A group of misfits and outcasts make the most out of summer camp. It has one of the best casts in movie history including Janeane Garofalo, Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Michael Showalter and many more.
4. The Seven Year Itch
This classic stars Marilyn Monroe and, yes, it’s the one with her famous “subway” scene. The plot is simple, a man’s family goes away for a summer vacation and he is tempted by his beautiful and charming next door neighbor.
3. Dirty Dancing
“Nobody puts Baby in the corner.” Perhaps one of the most romantic and sexiest movies in existence; a dance instructor at a holiday camp in 1963 (Patrick Swayze) and a upper-class woman (Jennifer Grey) who is visiting with her family, fall in love, quite dramatically.
2. Now and Then
Four 12 year-old girls in 1970 have one of the most exciting coming-of-age summer adventures (plus Christina Ricci, Thora Birch, Demi Moore, Rosie O’Donnell and more).
By far one of Ben Stiller’s best performances, Heavyweights chronicles the struggles and triumphs of boys at a fat camp that gets bought-out by a ego-maniac over-zealous fitness instructor.
There you have it, five movies for the five weeks left of summer. They’re light-hearted, crisp, joyful choices for any upcoming laid-back evenings of entertainment.
