Christian Parrish Takes the Gun is from the Crow Nation Reservation outside of Billings, MT—not far from where I live.

He raps in his native language. He goes by the name SupaMan.

In a PolicyMic interview with SupaMan, he talks about being able to relate to things that hip hop artists and rappers talk about in their work: Poverty, drinking, drugs, crime. He bridges the gap between hip hop’s ghetto life and his own reservation life by explaining the parallels between the two; his work draws upon his indigenous beliefs and hip hop influences. He’s been interviewed by NPR and named MTV’s Artist of the Week.

Not bad, considering that he hails from the middle-of-nowhere, MT.

To me, it seems like Christian Parrish Takes the Gun has harnessed a great way to keep a culture alive—in a positive way that is really fun to listen to.
