Jim Carrey Plants a Seed. {Video}

As amazing as the snippets are, the full speech is spectacular.

A comedian might seem like an incongruent choice to give the commencement address at a university that pioneered a new approach to learning called Consciousness-based learning; a university where all students and faculty practice Transcendental Meditation, a university whose founder believed that the purpose of life is the expansion of happiness. Perhaps Marianne Williamson or Wayne Dyer or any one of the many spiritual leaders out in the world today would’ve made more sense on the surface. But the Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa did not ask a person known in the world-wide spirituality movement.

No, they chose a world famous actor and comedian.

They chose Jim Carrey. And what a perfect choice it was. Snippets of his commencement address have been popping up on various social media outlets. As amazing as the snippets are, the full speech (see below) is spectacular. It is much more rich and textured than the awesome sound bytes being shared across the internet. Take 26 minutes to watch the full version of the speech. It’s a speech that includes Monsanto and Ayurvedic jokes—both equally funny. It’s a speech that includes pearls of wisdom such as:

“No matter what you gain, ego will not let you rest.”

“Risk being seen in all your glory.”

“Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world.”

Another reason to watch the full speech? His painting.

Yes, apparently Jim Carrey is also a painter.

An amazing painter. The painting he reveals halfway through the speech took my breath away. It’s a painting he spent thousands of hours creating. He claims that painting is on of the ways he frees himself from concern. By the way, “freeing people from concern” is his purpose in life. Watch the video to see what that means exactly. Seriously, watch it.

It’s one of the most inspiring speeches I’ve ever heard.

One that I’ll turn to again and again. One that promises to change how I live my days, how I live my life.
