Gandhi’s Voice. ~ Talia Albano {Poem}

Gandhi_thinking_mood_1931

I want unity.

I want non-violence.
I want truth.
And I want it for everyone.

Hindus, Islams, Muslims and Christians,
We must all unite.
We must all be good.
We must all be kind.
God has no religion.

Small grains of salt stick together in my hand,
I begin to march,
for the people,
challenging Britain.
No more taxes.

But today, this Empire is no longer one.
India.
Pakistan.
Division.

People roar with glee.
Banners blow in the searing wind.
Their faces are happy.
Are their hearts as well?
Mine is not.
Alone I mourn for the once united
place.

I bend down to pray.
I see a man.
He has a gun,
and his face is not happy.
I suspect his heart isn’t either.

One.
Two.
Three shots are fired.
At me.
And that is all it takes.

I am floating
up,
up,
up,
away from my divided country.
and into the arms of God.
