People My Age Don’t Think of Joan Rivers as a Comedian.

I hate housework! You make the beds, you do the dishes and six months later you have to start all over again.”

“I’ve had so much plastic surgery, when I die they will donate my body to Tupperware.”

~ Joan Rivers

Joan Rivers passed away today.

I remember her as the host of shows on a network I would never watch called E!

But she had a life before that. She’s didn’t get famous by talking to celebrities about whatever ridiculous outfits they wore on the red carpet. She got famous by doing stand-up comedy.

Female comedians were almost unheard of when she started performing in the 1960s. I have to assume she paved the way for great female comedians like Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler.

Not only did she pave the way, but she was also progressive. She was pro-gay rights before that was normal. We don’t usually think of people in her generation as pro-equality (she was born in 1933).

But she said:

“Any straight person complaining about the Supreme Court striking down DOMA should be forced to hire a heterosexual wedding planner.”

This is a joke, of course, but she’s using humor to express something important. That’s a kind of comedy that we should appreciate.

Rest in Peace, Joan Rivers.

I hope people realize how important you were.

Don’t follow any advice, no matter how good, until you feel as deeply in your spirit as you think in your mind that the counsel is wise.”
