In a Heartbeat. {Poem}

hearts on bricks

My heart, steady yet wild

Beats like a primal drum.

She keeps time within my chest,

But she doesn’t know time at all.

Thump, thump, thump.

She’s curious magic.

Keeping me alive

Raw and warm

Reminding me I’m more than flesh and blood,

She reminds me that I’m soul.

A whole life happens in a single heartbeat.

In a heartbeat, I learn to love.

Peeling back my sparkly pretenses to let you see me.

Breaking, falling down, falling apart, rebuilding

And kissing with lips that burn like sunshine.

In a heartbeat, I learn to be here.

Tasting each juicy moment that slips by

A million flavors sting my tongue.

Laughing, crying,

Both at the same time,

Salty tears with a side of smiling joy.

In a heartbeat, I learn to trust.

Setting aside black clouds of doubt-filled anxiety

Touching the earth

Trusting my breath

And then, with wobbly feet, trusting life.

In a heartbeat, I begin again.

A clean slate, empty of old resentments

Shiny new mistakes, ready to make.

Breathing, just, breathing

Inhaling freshly squeezed air

Exhaling, exhaling, exhaling.

And then exhaling a little bit more.

A whole life happens in a single heartbeat.

Right here, right now.

I start over for the thousandth time,

Softer and stronger than before.

My heart, steady yet wild,

Thumps as the moon paints the sunrise to life.

She guides me home.
