No Free Pass. {Poem}

Sundown on the Missouri

Sitting with it long

Sitting with it hard
Whiskey bottles in the neighbors yard

Lord, take me up with you tonight

Rail cars buckling underneath the bridge
you can smell leaves burning out across the ridge

And baby, I’m surrendering tonight

There is no free pass
From the crying bench
There’s no redemption
When you are broken like this
Cast what’s left
Out upon the water
Apologies are worthless
When there’s too many to mention

Mmmmm, the damage

I watched you move like smoke
Out across the boards
I was transfixed by the magic show

Please let me shut my eyes tonight

And when I get done picking myself off the floor
The voodoo is going to work and I won’t suffer no more

And baby, I’m over and out this time

There is no free pass
From the crying bench
There’s no redemption
When you are broken like this
Cast what’s left
Out upon the water
Apologies are worthless
When there are too many to mention

Mmmmm, damage

It’s what we do
