DO NOT REUSE 21 - Longing as a Guide

In one of his poems, Rumi talks about how we need to let our longing be our guide.

I love this idea.

The things we long for are not distractions but guiding lights on our own personal path to balance and happiness—to living a fulfilling life.

What would you do with your time if you had no obligations? If your day was a blank canvas that you could paint on with any colour? Would you work on your singing voice or start an insect collection? Learn more architecture or poetry? The things we are drawn to do, without any pressure or guidance, help reveal to us the things we can do with our life to bring us fulfilment and balance.

I will say that there is a clear divide for me between longing and desire. Longing for something is when that thing is constructive, will facilitate personal growth and cause no direct harm to ourselves or others. Whereas desire is different and we needn’t and probably shouldn’t indulge in all the things we desire.

Take a second and think about what you would do with your time if it was all your own—then try to build a little bit of time for this into your daily routine. Who knows where it may lead you?
