Who doesn’t love a chance for a do-over?
Birthdays, Mondays, the first of the month, the solstice, and ah—the holy grail of them all: the first day of a fresh, new year.
While we may be grateful for the lessons and experiences that come from failing, sometimes we just can’t shake the horrible feeling we’re left with after letting others—and ourselves—down.
But these two magic words help immensely:
Instead of waiting for a specific point in time to try again, we can start over right now. We could have an argument with someone, take a deep breath, and start again immediately with more compassion. When we’ve had an awful day, we could even begin again right before we go to sleep: take a deep breath, remind yourself that each new day is a gift, and go to sleep knowing you get a fresh one when you wake up.
So, that’s probably why we don’t need to make resolutions for the new year. We always have the opportunity to start over—right when we need it most.
