THE SAME DIFFERENT AS YOU

Why does it seem only ok to be different

as long as I’m the same different as you?

Isn’t it ok to have all kinds of thoughts

about what it is we consider to be true?

Maybe our voices sound different,

or maybe it’s the color of our hair.

Maybe you’re into jeans and I’m into dresses,

but does it really matter that much what we wear?

Maybe you tan and I freckle,

or maybe you‘re an extrovert and I’m not.

Maybe you run and train for marathons,

and I prefer sticking to my morning walk.

What if I love dogs and you really love cats?

Does that mean we can never truly get along?

Or what if my favorite food is pasta and yours sushi?

Does that make me right and you wrong?

Maybe you’re tall and I’m shorter,

or maybe you like scary movies by far.

Maybe I went to college and you didn’t get to.

Who says our differences are all that we are?

Maybe together we turn out to be more

than just the sum of our individual parts.

Maybe if we made room for what we don’t understand,

we could start communicating with the love in our hearts.

Our minds are often what divide us

because they like to categorize this way and that.

Their habit is to label, judge and separate,

and when disagreed with to go on the attack.

Maybe our hearts can begin to teach us

that the way to go beyond is to go through.

Maybe we will find that by coming together,

we can create a bigger truth than we ever thought we knew!
