In 2021, I Hope you Rise. I Hope you Build. I Hope you Accept Change.

Oxford is trying to put up a list of 2020’s words.

Between “social distancing” and “Black Lives Matter,” they put “blursday,” which means that days fade one into another, not having anything for us to remember.

I tend to disagree, though. It’s been eight months now—about 240 days.

It’s crazy to think that it’s been so long, yet when I think back, it looks like I am looking at another life.

It’s been 240 days of smiles and tears, hope and despair. Almost one year of erasing old things and building new ones—sometimes even erasing new ones in order to make room for other new ones again.

There was never a day in which I didn’t meet myself, test myself, become friends with myself, or even, sometimes, hate myself.

I’ve learned what healthy depending on others means, what loss means, and what getting up to a wrecked world and rebuilding it every day means.

But I’ve learned to be happy with the sun and laugh when it rains too.

I’ve learned to say “thank you” and “I love you” more often. I’ve learned to give myself space and grant others theirs too.

So I can’t take the word “blursday” as a word for 2020. But I strongly propose “riseday,” as we rise every day in a new world and build a new “us.”

Maybe 2021 will be a fulfillment of these whole changes, or maybe we got so used to change that we will do it, relentlessly, every time is necessary.

The important thing is, wanted or not, 2020 taught us something that mother nature has known since forever: the only constant thing is change.

So today is a “riseday.”

Let us build some sunshine while here.
