Rohima Miah MD Reflects On How Your Health Can Affect Your Relationship

Numerous studies find that happiness in relationships contributes significantly to general health. Conversely, when relationships cause strife and unhappiness, health suffers. As an experienced psychiatrist, Rohima Miah MD has had to navigate this situation with clients time and time again. Rohima Miah suggests that by maintaining an honest and positive relationship, each person will benefit from less stress and greater well being. Of course, fulfilling health needs can mean different things to different couples, and sometimes, some thought and planning is required to create the right conditions for both parties.

The Active Couple

Everyone knows at least one highly active couple that are always running marathons together or are engaged in strenuous athletic activities. These individuals seem to thrive on challenging each other to excel. This can be a healthy way to eat well, stay active and maintain good health. The key here is to maintain awareness of how your partner is doing, and when you see a troubling sign, encourage them to back off their training or activities. Supporting their self-care is as important as achieving mutual physical goals.

When Couples Have Different Health Needs

Sometimes, couples have widely divergent health needs. One individual may get up at the crack of dawn for a daily run or workout at the gym. The other person may enjoy a more relaxed health regime, such as yoga, tai chi or swimming. This difference can also extend to eating habits, with one person chowing down on a meaty, high-protein diet, while the other goes vegan. If you look for foods and activities you both enjoy, you will be able to keep each individual contented.

Managing Chronic Health Problems and Relationships

When one partner has a chronic illness, bowing out of activities or asking for help can cause strains. In addition, the caregiving partner can be subject to “burnout.” In these situations, good communication and being honest about one’s needs can help to create a closer, more balanced relationship. Getting outside help to allow the caregiver to enjoy their own activities can be especially important. This help can also help to relieve feelings of guilt in the affected partner.

Communication and Health Needs

It’s important for couples to feel comfortable expressing their health needs to each other. This can be particularly difficult for men, who are often trained to consider it a sign of weakness to admit an injury or illness. Partners should always use their eyes and ears to detect signs of a health problem that is developing and listen carefully when their partner is having a health issue. They should always encourage medical care when necessary and be willing to keep the partner company when treatment or simple rest and recuperation is needed.
