You’re deficient, I’m deficient, we’re all de-fish-ent!

I don’t know about you, but these days I’m beyond tired. I’m tired almost as soon as I wake up, and irritable and moody to boot.

Once the fatigue, doom, and gloom finally stop raining on my parade, the reminders pour in that my mind isn’t as sharp as it used to be. I’m having more little details corrected than I am correcting these days, and that’s a hard one to swallow for someone who prides herself in being detail-oriented.

My skin itches with self-judgment—or is that the dry patches that seem to be popping up in places that used to be silky smooth?

Honestly, my body’s just flat-out uncomfortable these days. Sure, at 36, I could chalk it all up to aging but that isn’t necessarily the case.

Less than 20 percent of the global population is getting enough of the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids fats our bodies need (1), and up to 98 percent of Americans and German participants in one study were found to be deficient in the essential nutrient (2). We’re essentially starving for nutrients, which leaves us to wrestle on the daily with fatigue, poor memory, dry skin, inflammation, mood swings or worse—depression, poor circulation, and even heart problems. (3)

Okay, so grab the fish oil, right? Wrong—sorta.

Fish oil isn’t necessarily the new snake oil, but it’s also not the cure all we might want to think it is. Fish oils are kind of like the teen trying to rank up in the family. They have their strengths and puff up their chest, but poke and prod a little bit and they’re easily deflated.

So, let’s talk about the ancestral grand-daddy of fish-sourced Omega-3s—caviar.

For centuries, fish eggs have been considered by many cultures to be a sacred food that provides us with all of the nutritional building blocks we need to support our health and wellbeing, making us healthy, smart, and strong.

Traditional peoples, Native Americans, and early ancestral healers believed that eating the organs from a healthy animal would strengthen and support the health of the corresponding organ of the individual. Eating the eggs of a healthy animal, then, is known to support fertility, strength, and optimal overall health.

The natives of South America would sometimes travel for weeks from their mountain villages down to the sea to gather eggs, dry them, and carry them back to their tribe to give to women of childbearing age to ensure adequate nourishment, healthy babies, and children that would grow strong. (3)

Today, salmon eggs remain among the first foods Tlingit mothers feed their infants, beginning at eight or nine months. Their children grow with the necessary nutrition for optimal development as well as, it is believed, a life-long love of seafood.

Now, we could go on for ages discussing the supposed benefits of just about any diet as we continue to research and speculate which is the most beneficial to the human body, or the most sustainable when it comes to the ever-growing population of our continuously warming globe as its resources dwindle each day.

But placing all debate aside, let’s look at the simple, indisputable fact that historically it’s been difficult to meet (or is it meat?) all of our nutritional needs.

Meat and fish have long been difficult to come by. We have never sauntered out into a plain and had a bison throw itself onto our spear. We have never walked into a flowing river and had a salmon jump into our hungry arms. We’ve had to work hard to reap the sweet reward of quality nutrients. Perhaps that’s why the name caviar is derived from the Persian word châv-jâr which means “cake of strength and power.” (4)

Our bodies are rich in Omega-3 Kryptonite.

Sure, today many of us live in a world that seems to be abundant in easily acquired food that we assume is sufficient if not rich in nutrition. But abundance doesn’t actually mean we get all that we need from our animal-sourced proteins. In fact, too much of a “good thing” can lead to a bad thing, and that’s exactly the case for the Kryptonite of Omega-3s: Omega-6s.

The typical American diet contains 14 to 25 times more omega-6 fatty acids (usually sourced from beef and poultry), than omega-3s (5), which leads to slow and steady depletion of Omega-3s and a higher incidence of heart disease, neurological disorders, and infertility (6). Not to mention, this imbalance also increases inflammation over time (5).

Our bodies deserve better.

The Caviar of Omega-3 Supplements

Frankly, I don’t eat much fish, and I’ve only had caviar once. So, the chances that I find and then keep fresh, wild-caught caviar in my refrigerator and take a tablespoon or more of it daily to reap its health benefits is pretty slim. I’m not alone.

The average American eats about 225 pounds of meat (7), but only 19 pounds of fish yearly (8), and US fish consumption is among the lowest in the industrialized world (9).

Ultimately, we want to see a balance between the Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids in our bodies. Enter fish eggs and fish oil.

That’s where Ancestral Supplements comes in. Dedicated practitioners of ancient nose-to-tail consumption practices, Ancestral’s Fresh-Caught Fish Eggs are sourced from New Zealand Hoki roe through one of the best-managed trawl fisheries in the world, certified as sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), which is basically the global gold standard for sustainability.

Virtually free of toxic pollutants like mercury and other heavy metals, Ancestral Supplements’ Hoki roe is processed through a minimalistic freeze-drying process, which means that you get all that most heat-processed fish oil supplements have to offer, and more:

Phospholipid Omega-3s: DHA, EPA, & ETA:

Caviar was once prescribed as an antidepressant remedy. If that sounds fishy, science backs that it’s probably due to the three Musketeers of Omega 3s found in fish eggs: DHA supports brain development; EPA prevents inflammation—namely in the brain, which can help reduce depression, ADHD, and other brain trauma (10); and ETA supports joint health for well-wounded overall health.

Vitamin D:

Fun fact: A single tablespoon of fish roe contains more Vitamin D than a midday dose of sunshine. This nutrient helps with glucose regulation, the development of healthy bones, and improving the tone of the uterus.

K2-MK4 (Activator X):

Enables our bodies to absorb and utilize all of the minerals from the foods we eat. So, essentially, it helps literally everything. It’s pretty much a superhero.

Vitamin A:

Another superhero necessary for the assimilation of minerals in the diet—including protein utilization.

Zinc:

This “helper molecule” is Vitamin A’s sidekick. It plays a vital role in delivering Vitamin A from the liver to other soft tissues throughout the body. This is a super important player in pregnancy and post-partum wellness.

Choline:

Impacts liver function, healthy brain development, muscle movement, nervous system and metabolism as well as cognitive function.

Iodine:

An essential component of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which regulate multiple systems in our bodies. A key player in immune system maintenance.

GAGs:

Also referred to as the “glue of life,” these play a vital role in the health of cartilage, tendons, skin and connective tissue (11).

So, what’s the difference between taking fish oil and fish egg supplements, you ask?

Fish eggs are better—hook, line, and sinker.

Let’s give you a visual: Your great, great, great, great, great (you get the point) grandfather’s body is craving some Omega-3s. He starts wringing out that fish he caught as if it were a wet dish rag. How much oil do you think you’d get from one whole fish?

Okay, right, so the reality is that you’d have to cook it first, which means processing, resulting in losing some of the heat sensitive vitamins, minerals, and co-factors that make organ meats—including fish eggs—so incredibly nourishing and (here’s the key) easy to absorb.

Basically, when we take processed fish oil, we are missing out on some key nutrients that enable our bodies to absorb the nutrients we think we’re getting from fish oil. And if we don’t absorb, we’re literally p*ssing away some of the supposed benefits of our supplements.

Fish roe, on the other hand, is a full source of all of the nutrients we need, which is probably why caviar was once a delicacy for Kings and the aristocracy and likely the reason that, in the Middle Ages, the highest quality caviar was legally reserved for the monarchy.

And isn’t that how we should all be treating our bodies these days—like royalty?

Look, we’re all going through a lot with a worldwide pandemic going on year two. As overwhelmed as we are with various technological advancements speeding life up—while global illness is somehow simultaneously forcing things to feel as if it’s all going in slow motion—our bodies and minds deserve the best chance they can get at thriving.

Maybe it’s time we give them eggs-actly what they need.
