October’s Moons: The Most Mystical Month of the Year.

I’ve always loved autumn, but more so now that I am in tune with the natural cycles of Earth Mama and the Cosmos.

There is something so comforting about pulling out our favorite sweaters and sipping hot tea cuddled under a blanket and staring at the stars during this time of year.

Do you look forward to changing your decor, buying new candles to light the shorter days like I do? In the area where I live on Vancouver Island, a plethora of rural festivals pop up, complete with piles of pumpkins, sunflowers, and other harvest themes. A visit to my local honey farm delights the senses, but I have to admit that the newborn fall goat kids are another exciting reason to say I’m going to stock up on several jars of honey.

I love shoulder seasons, those in-between times when the outgoing and incoming seasons frolic together, surprising us with a bit of either reality. It is a reflection of our own internal climates, where one day can play host to any number of emotions, our tides ebbing and falling, not sure in which direction we’re turning. However, I do find it rather beautiful; we are inherently magical creatures.

October is part of the Dark Moon Season of the year, if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere. From Autumn Equinox to Winter Solstice, we enter the darkest of days, the most inward journey, and a mysticism that only Scorpio season can muster.

This is the time when our deepest work with ancestors is accomplished. It is a call to unfettered rest. You may be able to feel this in your cells—a natural surrender to introspective pursuits. Give in to this.

This October, the best of news is that the final Mercury Retrograde of the year is done and dusted! We can still expect some leftover turbulence until mid-October in post shadow, but mostly, Mercury has had its fun with us.

First Quarter Moon occurs simultaneously, a time to tend to practical matters, revising action steps toward this month’s goals, supporting ourselves with kindness, and observing what obstacles may be stopping us from taking those next steps.

October 9 brings full moon in Aries, which is a double hit of heightened emotions, bringing our personal struggles to the fore. At any full moon, I always suggest balancing those big energies with whatever grounding rituals we may have. This month, pay closer attention to those relationships that trigger or support your ability to stay rational in the face of drama.

Last Quarter Moon in Cancer focuses on family and home and ties smoothly into the theme ahead of Scorpio Season and a solar eclipse. Here is where we truly reflect, release, and prepare for the potential transitions of this season.

A solar eclipse magnifies things in our lives and in the general consciousness. It is a pivotal time where bigger aspects of our lives may change, usually putting us on the track we are meant to follow to actualize our soul’s intention. These transitions can also be called a mini-death—an energetic shift that propels us. We experience these many times in our lives. Usually, when we look back, we can see the profundity of their occurrence.

At Samhain, we enter the Underworld of our consciousness. It is the Witches New Year and the beginning of a new journey through the labyrinth of our human experience. We let go of what is no longer a teacher, learn to love our shadows, and summon the ancestors while the veil between worlds is thin. The descent to the darkest days of the year ensues. What a powerful portal!

So, there you are, Mystical October at a glance, where Libra season ends and Scorpio season begins, the element of Air giving way to Water, intellect giving way to intuition.

(Southern Hemisphere celebrates Beltane, the cross-festival between Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice on October 31.)

And so it is, blessed be.

I share more as the month unfolds on my Instagram account. I’d love to see you there!
