Here are the transformative insights I brought home from my visit to the Pueblo reservation, shaping my approach to 2024

As I explored the Bandelier Pueblo reserve (New Mexico), I found myself immersed in a lifestyle that thrived nearly 500 years ago. Nestled in a breathtaking valley, I marveled at the ancient homes (caves carved in rock formations), now preserved as remarkable historical heritage. Seated in what was once a bedroom and safe refuge carved into the rocks, I meditated, transcending into a time when humans and nature coexisted for survival.

Gazing down the valley, I spotted two deer, prompting reflections on the Native American daily hunting rituals that sustained their families and communities. On this chilly day, I thought about the importance of fur obtained from hunting buffalo, deer, foxes, wolves, and other abundant animals. The untouched beauty of nature, where water was once plentiful, struck me profoundly, underscoring the pivotal role it played in the establishment of the Bandelier Native Reservation. I also reflected on some of the chores my grandma performed every day in my native Italy when I was a child including collecting woods and water to ensure we got fed and we stayed warm during cold days in winter.

This introspective journey in the reservation prompted a comparison of my modern life in North America, starting from my morning routine and some of the things I take for granted. I contemplated the excesses of technology and the luxuries of readily available water, heat, and sanitation services, commodities I often take for granted, yet they can subtly impact our happiness and well-being. Here are the transformative insights I carried home from my visit to the Pueblo reservation, shaping my approach to 2024:

1. Unplugging in the Morning: I have decided to commence each day without the distraction of a cell phone or social media. This intentional start allows me to set positive intentions for myself, my loved ones, and my teams. The first hour of my day is dedicated to awakening, savoring a freshly made cappuccino, and preparing breakfast for my family. This routine has significantly elevated my happiness and reduced anxiety.

2. Digital Detox During Dinner: Recognizing the importance of being fully present, I now power off my cell phone before dinner (around 7pm). This deliberate act minimizes interference from work-related messages and digital expectations, enabling me to focus on myself, my family, and evening activities. I have noticed that since doing this my heart rate has decreased.

3. Mindful Journaling Before Bed: Prior to bedtime, I engage in reading and writing in my journal. Additionally, five minutes before closing my eyes, I reflect on the happiest moments of the day, delving into why these instances were significant. This meditative practice has resulted in better and more profound sleep.

Final Thought: Let’s revisit the cherished habits of our grandparents, embracing morning and night rituals of shared meals and meaningful conversations without any interruption form phones or computer. Celebrate these small luxuries with gratitude, as they contribute to maintaining good health, focus, and the elimination of what does not truly matter.
