They say, “Breath is life.”
And while this is true, there is another way to quickly regulate that has nothing to do with your lungs.
Wherever you are right now, I want you to try something.
Look straight ahead and maintain “soft focus.” This is when your gaze is unfixed on a particular spot, but expands to your peripheral vision.
When you’re stressed, your vision narrows to fully take in and understand the threat in front of you.
Using soft focus is an immediate signal to the nervous system that you are safe and away from danger.
As you gaze, notice how your peripheral vision widens to include right, left, top, and bottom. Notice the expansion and the peace this brings you.
You may find yourself sighing while your breathing slows and deepens.
Your shoulders will drop, and your tummy will soften.
Continue maintaining soft focus until you are completely relaxed.
Now, your nervous system feels fully safe and surrendered. Your immune system just got the green light to repair and rejuvenate, and your mind is clearer, sharper, and free from anxiety.
Soft focus is used in Viewpoints, a performance technique that was born from dance and is used by actors and ensembles to foster connection.
When you use soft focus in your daily life, you will start to change deep stress patterns in your body and mind. It relieves the conscious mind of having to figure things out.
Use it while you wait in line, are on hold on the phone, or while meditating (yes, you can meditate with your eyes open!).
Notice how your body responds to this deep feeling of safety and self-connection.
I’d love to hear how this resonated for you in the comments!
