My Allergies Were a Call to Action.

Sometimes I feel like I’m allergic to everything.

Growing up, I had a lot of asthma-related problems, meaning I was basically allergic to air.

To this day, my lungs literally start to itch if I get near freshly mowed grass and smoke still makes my chest close up. I would get daily nose bleeds and would literally carry boxes of Kleenex around with me. My skin breaks out when I use scented lotions and when I use band aids. I’m allergic to earrings…which is so sad. My face puffs out and turns red when I’m around cats, even when I take medicine, which is even sadder. Dairy doesn’t like me.

Mold wants to kill me. Mondays…well, actually I’m probably the only person ever who likes Mondays!

I often wondered why life had it out for me. What had I done in my past life to deserve this? What did I do wrong?

The universe must hate me.

But, honestly, all of those issues were just lessons. They were the universe trying to get me to listen…listen to my body and start asking questions. I’m still not sure why I’m not supposed to go near cats, but everything else has made me take a closer look at the world around me: pollution, the food industry, and how I treat my body.

We live the majority of our time in this life unconsciously, stuck in habits, and doing things because “that’s how they’ve always been done.” It’s normal to pick up groceries at the store and not question where they’ve come from. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I even started reading ingredients lists on package labels! We go with what’s easy and not with what’s right (whether that’s morally right or what’s right for our on individual bodies).

Our lives have turned into those unpleasant trips to the gym. You know the ones I’m talking about. You push yourself until something tears and you can barely walk. Why? Because that’s what you’re supposed to do.

According to whom? I have no idea.

My allergies were a call to action. I had to approach things a little differently, be more careful and conscious about what I put in and on my body, and really be aware of what was happening around me.

Even if you don’t have the weird allergies that I do, we all have something in our lives that pushes us to take a closer look at our lives and this world. The question is, will we look? Will we do the research? Will we make the changes necessary?

The easiest thing to do is keep going with the flow and ignore the truth. I watched this documentary in college about the meat industry and, to this day, I still have nightmares about it (and I had already been a vegetarian when I watched it!).

It would have been too easy to get stuck in sadness when I couldn’t wear earrings like everyone else in my class or have a kitty. I could have let my chronic nosebleeds and insomnia and asthma totally bring me down. But, I chose to charge forward and look for better ways to live.

The universe doesn’t hate us.

We were born for a reason. We all have a Divine purpose to fulfill in this lifetime.

The universe has our backs.

So let’s have the universe’s back in return.

We have the power to change lives, starting with our own.
